A 2026 expansion of the UAE’s Golden Visa added teachers to the list of eligible categories, alongside nurses and several other professions. The visa offers long-term residency of five or ten years and is self-sponsored, meaning holders are not tied to a single employer and avoid the routine renewal cycle.
Dubai’s KHDA already operates a Golden Visa route for "outstanding educators" in private education, and Ras Al Khaimah has announced its own scheme covering teachers in both public and private schools, with criteria including several years of service in the emirate, an advanced degree and demonstrated performance.
Retention, not just recruitment
The significance is in what it changes. For a region that has spent a decade competing hard to attract international teachers, decoupling residency from a specific employer reframes the contest — from luring staff for a two-year contract to giving them a reason to put down roots.
